Students in Brussels ask for Saint V holiday to be recognized as cultural heritage day

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) announced yesterday that its student association has applied to register the Saint Verhaegen Festival as a cultural heritage day. The application is supported by the Saint V committee and the Center for Cultural Heritage, Historical Knowledge and Central Archives (CAVA) and was submitted to the Culture, Youth, Sport and Media Department of the Flemish Community.

Since 1888, the two universities in Brussels, VUB and ULB, have been commemorating their founder Pierre-Théodore Verhaegen every 20 November, the anniversary of ULB’s official opening. ULB, from which the Dutch-speaking VUB later separated, was created on November 20, 1834.

A day off from studies is granted and yesterday was no exception to the rule with academic ceremonies and the traditional student procession from Sablon which gathered 6,000 people.
