New from next year: Shorter waiting period in case of illness for self-employed

Self-employed people will benefit from sick allowance after two weeks of illness instead of one month as of 1st January 2018. The sick allowance is paid out by the health insurance after a waiting period. The Ministers of Social Affairs and Independents, Maggie De Block and Denis Ducarme, have decided to reduce this waiting period to 14 days since the period was considered too long.

The measure will benefit 17,006 self-employed people: 14,172 of them, who have been unable to work for more than a month, will be able to benefit more quickly from their allowances and 2,834 self-employed persons with a sick period of 15 days to a maximum of 1 month, will now also benefit from an allowance.

Approximately € 9 million will be spent on this measure in 2018.
