Driver seriously injures 5-year-old and flees scene in Schaerbeek

On Sunday afternoon, a driver hit a father and his daughter, aged five, before committing the offence of fleeing the scene in Schaerbeek. The health condition of the little girl, initially considered to be life-threatening, has developed favourably. One of the two individuals in the car was able to be intercepted, and will have a police hearing in the matter.

This was indicated on Sunday by Denis Goeman, spokesman for the Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office. The criminal investigation to identify the second suspect is currently in progress.

The accident occurred around 3.30 p.m. As alluded to above a driver hit a father and his daughter, aged five, who were both walking on the pavement of Avenue Paul Deschanel, in Schaerbeek. The driver then fled the scene. The little girl, who was in a critical condition, was taken to hospital. However, her state of health has improved favourably for her.

Both individuals in the vehicle which fled the scene then abandoned it, going their separate ways. One of then was intercepted by police and is due to have a police hearing.

A photograph published by the Facebook group "La Schaerbeekoise", shows that the accident happened by a playground. The same source also indicates that passers-by may have participated in intercepting the suspect who was caught.
