Major fire in Schaerbeek hangar

A major fire broke out on Monday night in a hangar in Schaerbeek, between Aerschot and Brabant streets. No injuries were reported, according to Pierre Meys, spokesman for the Bruxelles fire service.

The Bruxelles-Nord police precinct, which covers Schaerbeek as well as Evere and Saint-Josse-ten-Noode), said later that the situation was under control. About 10 homes were evacuated.

The fire broke out around 7.20 p.m. on the roof of a hangar at the corner of Aerschot Street and Brabant Street. According to the police, the building was being renovated. It spread very quickly and caused a huge cloud of smoke that was visible for many kilometres. Surrounding streets were closed to traffic.

The fire, which reportedly caused considerable damage, was brought under control by 9.00 p.m.

Its origin was not immediately known.
