Brussels Capitale-Ixelles police say around 65,000 people took part in the Climate March on Sunday. The Brussels march was organised by Climate Express and the Climate Coalition. The march happened at the same time as the 24th UN Climate Change Conference (COP24) in Katowice, Poland. Negotiations that aim to breathe new life into the Paris agreement will take place in two weeks.
National Environment Day started at 1pm on Sunday, in Brussels’ Gare du Nord. It will end at 5pm, with a climate-based event in Parc Cinquantenaire. There will be similar events in many other Belgian towns.
“On Sunday, the Climate Coalition and Climate Express called on our Belgian politicians to come up with a more ambitious climate policy at a national, European and global level”, says the President of the Climate Coalition Nicolas Van Nuffel. “We want global warming to be limited to 1.5°C, as stipulated in the Paris agreement”. The organisers say too many of the promises made in Paris three years ago have yet to be fulfilled.
“CO2 emissions in Belgium have been increasing again since 2014 because of a lack of political courage and cooperation. We need to step things up. More and more people are passing on the message”.
