The Brussels-Capital region had 9,317 young jobseekers at the end of January. You have to go back as far as 1990 to find the number of young jobseekers as low (9,150), Actiris, the Brussels office for employment, indicated on Monday. It was the 68th month with a consecutive decrease for this age category (under 25) for which the number has decreased by 35.8% (5,791 people), since 2014. The rate of unemployment has now reached 24.3%.
The Brussels region in total had 89,960 jobseekers (a rate of 16%) at the end of January. This 51st successive decrease in unemployment corresponds to a reduction of 1,917 people compared to last year (less than 2.1%). Compared to 2014, the number of jobseekers has reduced by 22,075 - 19.7%.
The detailed breakdown showed that Brussels had 61,136 jobseekers claiming benefit (known as ‘DEDA’), 4,930 youngsters gaining job experience and 23,894 other jobseekers, either registered as such of their own free will or compulsorily.
Amongst the 89,960 jobseekers, 12,607 (14%) are using the Public Social Services Centres (‘CPAS’ centres). There is now a higher percentage of CPAS users amongst youngsters, currently 22.3%.
During January 2019, Actiris received a total of 25,447 situations vacant.
