Maggie De Block (Open Vld), the Minister for Asylum and Migration, is not in favour of the creation of a reception centre for migrants in transit within the Parc Maximilien park. This was the response of her spokesman to a plea by NGOs for the opening of such a facility there.
The NGOs have called for the setting up of a centre able to supply these migrants with correct, comprehensive and easily understood information. However, the minister has no intention of responding sympathetically to their request.
Her department’s view is that migrants in transit can, as in any case, request asylum using the normal procedure. “Either they obtain asylum, or if not then they have to leave the country. The same rules apply to everyone,” said De Block’s spokesman.
