A suspicious package was discovered Thursday morning around 09:00 at the mail sorting centre in Neder-over-Heembeek, the Brussels police said. The envelope contained an unknown powder, which is being treated as suspicious.

The two people who came in contact with the envelope were quarantined, and the workplace was evacuated. Those who came into contact with the suspect product do not show any particular symptoms but were taken to the hospital until the nature of the product is identified.

The HAZMAT team of firefighters placed the package with the powder in a hermetically sealed container to be handed over to civil protection.

Civil Protection assists the population when minor and major disasters occur. It also supports emergency services with heavy and specialised equipment. The Civil Protection in Belgium comprises 450 professionals and 650 volunteers that are available 24h/24, 365 days a year.
