Fire service immerses hybrid car in water container

The Brussels fire service had to immerse a hybrid car in a container full of water on Sunday night, after the car caught fire while it was charging.

The fire happened in the Rue Volta in Ixelles on Sunday around midnight, and was put out quickly, but the fire service decided to immerse the vehicle in a container filled with water because of the thermal instability of the battery cells.

"The fire service called upon a car assembly factory in Forest, and aksed to use its designated container specifically for these cases," said Walter Derieuw, spokesperson of the fire service, to Bruzz. "The car will stay submerged for as long as it takes to completely cool down the battery cells," he added.
