Politicians want to see Brussels police zones merging into one

Following clashes on New Year's eve in Molenbeek, several parties called for Brussels police zones to merge. Prior to the Belgian elections, Pieter De Crem, Minister of Interior, warned that the issue and urgency of merging of Brussels police districts "had reached a breaking point." Without one merged single police zone, it's impossible to provide a good service in Brussels, according to De Crem.

Jan Jambon from N-VA shares his idea but believes it only offers a partial solution, and that the management of police districts still concerns all 19 mayors in Brussels region.

The francophone parties have until now rejected any scenario, which does not have the backing of the players on the ground.

De Crem nevertheless thinks that the merger would eventually happen. "Bruxelles-Hal-Vilvorde must never be split up, but that is just what has been happening," he remarked.
