Saint Gilles square to be transformed into green city park

The Brussels municipality of Saint-Gilles has approved the construction of a large city park in the areas surrounding the recently-renovated Parvis de Saint Gilles in an attempt to create a “green lung” in the municipality.

The urban redevelopment project will aim to introduce more greenery into the area by replacing Place Marie Janson —most commonly known as the Carré de Moscou— with a park and an extensive pedestrian area covering the square’s 14,000 square metres.

The new park will cover the areas between the Rue de l'Hôtel des Monnaies and the Parvis de Saint Gilles.

The project will be the latest addition to a series of urban renovations undertaken by the municipality after the Parvis de Saint-Gilles underwent extensive renovation works.

“The neighbourhood is now ready for a new renovation [project],” Saint-Gilles Mayor Charles Picqué told Bruzz, adding that the upcoming renovation would “offer residents a real added value.”

“Place Marie Janson is (...) one of the most densely populated neighbourhoods in Brussels,” municipal alderman Willem Stevens told Bruzz. “It is our ambition to build a green lung there, with quality leisure and meeting areas.”

The project will have an estimated budget of €3.8 million and will be jointly carried out by a Brussels design bureau and an Italian architecture firm, which previously oversaw the construction of a large park in Antwerp.
