Police have detained a potential suspect after a hit and run incident in Schaerbeek which left a young girl severely injured on Thursday morning.

The 28-year-old individual is suspected of being the driver of a blue BMW that hit a 14-year-old girl at around 8:00 AM on Thursday, leaving her severely injured on the road before fleeing the scene.

He was questioned after being identified and detained at around 18:00 on Thursday, the Brussels Prosecutor Office told BX1.

The victim sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after the incident, but reports say that her condition has now become stable.

While some media reports say it is not yet clear whether the girl crossed on a zebra path, on Friday, the father of the victim told Het Laatste Nieuws that his daughter had "used the zebra path, as it should be," and that the driver was "going too fast."

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident is ongoing, but witness accounts are reportedly "ambiguous."
