The man detained after a hit and run incident in Schaerbeek was released under certain conditions, the Brussels public prosecutor announced Friday.

After being brought in for questioning by police on Friday morning, a judge released the 28-year-old individual in the afternoon but banned him from driving a vehicle.

If the suspect fails to comply with the conditions of his release, he will be placed back in custody, according to Bruzz.

When the investigation is concluded, the public prosecutor will refer the individual to court.

On Thursday, the suspect ran over a 14-year-old girl in the Brussels municipality of Schaerbeek, leaving her severely injured.

The individual was later found to have been driving without a licence, behind the wheel of a blue BMW which was rented out under another name.

The victim of the incident was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition. She remains hospitalized, but her situation is stable.
