The three-month-old baby that was left behind in a launderette a few days ago in the Brussels municipality of Anderlecht has been identified, the Federal Police announced on social media. The girl's father reportedly came forward.

A remarkable search notice was distributed at the request of the Public Prosecutor's Office on Thursday about a woman who had abandoned a girl of barely three months old in a launderette in the Rue de la Clinique in Anderlecht on 29 July around 16:50.

She entered the launderette with a pram and after a few moments took off in the direction of Rue Brogniez, without the pram.

Via security camera footage, the police were able to track part of her way but the trail ended after a while. Therefore, the police appealed to the general public to find out who the woman and the baby were.

While the woman has not yet been found, the police have been able to identify the baby, they announced.

The baby's father, who never officially recognised the child, reportedly went to the police station, and also told the authorities who the mother of the child is. That information appears to match the facts, De Standaard reports.

The search for the mother is currently continuing. The baby remains in hospital for now.

Update: This article was updated to include information about the baby's father.
