With Covid-19 cases on the up, Brussels and Flanders are on high alert and have been colour-coded dark red on the ECDC Covid-19 map.

Every Thursday, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) publishes a European map based on the incidence over 14 days weighted by each region's vaccination coverage.

Four colours indicate the severity of the epidemiological situation: green, orange, red, and dark red. Some areas are also displayed in dark gray, when the test rate is insufficient, or in light gray, indicating a lack of data.

Brussels and Flanders have returned to dark red on the latest map, while Wallonia remains a lighter red.

The changes reflect the increase in Covid-19 cases across the country, with infections now exceeding 5,500 per day.

Almost all European regions display the colour dark red on the new map. In France, Italy, Greece and Portugal the epidemiological situation is especially concerning, the ECDC states.

Wallonia, Latvia, Croatia, parts of Ireland and Slovenia, as well as the Spanish region of Murcia, remain in a lighter red.
