Hidden Belgium: A wild walk in the dunes

The Belgian Coast often looks like an unbroken line of apartment buildings, but there are unexpected areas of wild dunes near De Panne where you can wander along peaceful trails.

The dunes lie to the east of the town not far from the French border in the protected Westhoek nature reserve.

Like a mini Sahara, the dunes slowly creep inland when the wind blows in from the sea.

Back in the 1960s and 1970s, Belgian film crews sometimes came to this desolate spot to film scenes set in the desert. You can sometimes be totally alone in this strange landscape.

Derek Blyth’s hidden secret of the day: Derek Blyth is the author of the bestselling “The 500 Hidden Secrets of Belgium”. He picks out one of his favourite hidden secrets for The Brussels Times every day.
