Hidden Belgium: Leuven Central

The volkscafé Leuven Central in the heart of Leuven opened in 2015 in an abandoned corner cafe. It gets its name from a plaque nearby that marks the official centre of Leuven.

The owners have carefully preserved the original interior with its wooden furniture, Stella Artois signs and rows of aspidistras on the window sills. They even offer authentic Flemish bar food, like pistolets met hesp (ham rolls), homemade meat balls and even a basket of hard boiled eggs on the counter.

Derek Blyth’s hidden secret of the day: Derek Blyth is the author of the bestselling “The 500 Hidden Secrets of Belgium”. He picks out one of his favourite hidden secrets for The Brussels Times every day.
