The United Nations on Monday strongly condemned a deadly weekend attack on trucks delivering aid in southern South Sudan.

The attack led to the suspension of deliveries to the area.

Two trucks were attacked on Saturday morning as they returned to Juba from delivering aid to families and children in Yei in the southern state of Central Equatoria, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement.

“The two drivers were shot dead and the two trucks were burnt and destroyed,” OCHA said, condemning the deadly attack "in the strongest terms.”

The UN Children's Fund has “suspended aid supplies to the area” as a result, it said.

The United Nations has warned that such attacks endanger the safe delivery of aid in South Sudan, the world’s most dangerous country for aid workers.

Since the beginning of the year, 24 aid workers have been killed there, according to the UN.
