The Netherlands will reintroduce land border controls on Monday 9 December, Dutch Asylum and Migration Minister Marjolein Faber (PVV) said on 11 October.
This is a temporary six-month measure to combat "irregular migration and migrant smuggling," Faber explained, adding that the controls will cause as little inconvenience as possible to commuters and economic traffic.
To do the checks, the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee and part of the Dutch army will carry out police missions. The police itself will not have any additional resources, so the number of checks will only increase gradually.
The plan is also to carry out checks at airports, on flights where "there is a risk of irregular migration or cross-border crime."
Ms. Faber has informed the European Commission, Council of Ministers, EU Member States and the European Parliament of the plan. This has to be done four weeks in advance, in accordance with European legislation.
The PVV, VVD, NSC and BBB parties have agreed to the border controls as part of the government agreement. It was agreed that they would begin this year.
