The City of Brussels confirmed on Sunday that the Brussels Marathon will no longer run through the capital from 2026.
The decision comes amid growing financial and logistical pressure, even as this year's edition broke participation records.
"We want to salute the work of the organisers and the dedication of the volunteers who, year after year, have made the Brussels Marathon a sporting event that showcases the beauty of our capital," said Socialist mayor Philippe Close and Liberal sports councillor Florence Frelinx.
"This decision was not easy to make, but it reflects our commitment to managing the city's resources responsibly and sustainably."
Brussels hosts more than 3,000 events every year, from demonstrations to cultural, sports and festive activities, placing heavy demands on its security, cleaning and coordination services.
The City said it now aims to focus its means on a more "balanced" calendar that ensures the quality and safety of all events it supports.
The 20th edition of the Brussels Airport Marathon & Half Marathon, held on Sunday, drew a record total of around 20,000 runners from 125 countries across the marathon, half marathon and 7km events.
Kenya's Hillary Mutai won the marathon, while Belgians Amaury Paquet and Amélie Saussez triumphed in the half-marathon.
