Copenhagen is abandoning its bid to become the world’s first carbon-neutral capital by 2025.
The goal is no longer realistic, Mayor Sophie Hæstorp Andersen told the Danish broadcaster Danmarks Radio. “It is hugely annoying that we are not going to make it by 2025. I am really sad about it,” the mayor said.
Copenhagen had been proclaiming the climate target for more than a decade. According to Danmarks Radio, the city has already reduced its CO2 emissions by 80 percent. However, a 100-percent reduction cannot be achieved in three years, the mayor said.
