After four years as the face of global climate protests, Swedish activist Greta Thunberg has indicated to Swedish news agency TT that she is ready to “pass on the megaphone” to others.

"We also need to hear the testimonies and experiences of the people most affected by the climate crisis,” the 19-year-old said. “The time has come to pass on the megaphone to those who really have stories to tell. We need new perspectives.”

Her desire to share the spotlight is based on the fact that climate change is already having a devastating effect on people’s lives worldwide.

“It only becomes more hypocritical when people in Sweden, for example, say we will be able to adapt and that we do not need to be afraid of what might happen in the future,” she argued.

Thunberg became the face of climate marches after she launched a school strike for climate in 2018. Out of that initial protest, the Fridays for Future environmental movement developed.

The Swedish activist previously made it clear she would not attend this month's COP27 climate summit in Egypt because it would be “greenwashing” - a marketing technique that makes people believe you are doing more for the climate than is actually the case.
