Ukrainian parliamentarians on Monday adopted draft sanctions against Iran - accused of supplying arms to Moscow for its invasion - thereby formalising the rift between Kyiv and the Islamic Republic.
"This resolution synchronises Ukrainian sanctions with the actions of the entire civilised world towards the complete isolation of Iran," the Ukrainian parliament said on its website.
The package of sanctions includes a ban on military trade with Iran, a halt to the transit of such goods through Ukraine and the "suspension of economic and financial obligations in favour of Iranian residents."
The text still has to be signed by President Volodymyr Zelensky before it can be promulgated. However, that is a mere formality since Zelensky is the one who introduced the resolution to Parliament, at the suggestion of its Security and Defence Council.
Iran, a close partner of Russia, is accused by Kyiv and the West of supplying weapons used by Moscow in its invasion of Ukraine, notably Shahed explosive drones.
"Today's Iran is a terrorist regime that poses a threat to Europe and the Middle East," Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhaïlo Podoliak blasted on Twitter on Sunday.
His message followed the largest drone attack on the Ukrainian capital, carried out by several dozen Iranian drones. "Tehran has become a key ally of Moscow in this war, deliberately supplying it with weapons for attacks on civilian cities," Podoliak charged.
President Zelensky addressed the Iranian people in a video last week, declaring that the "Shahed terrorise Ukraine every night." Tehran accused him on Saturday of criticising Iran in order to obtain more aid and weapons from the West.
