Bruges and the surrounding areas went dark last night after a technical breakdown led the street lights in the city to fail.

"There was indeed a defect in the street lighting," explained acting mayor Mercedes Van Volcem (Open VLD) to Het Nieuwsblad. As a result, it did not work throughout the entire territory of Bruges. Both the subburbs and the city centre remained dark, she added.

In the end, the problem was able to be solved over the course of the night. "It was a malfunction in the system that controls the public lighting at the level of the Waggelwater," explained Van Volcem.

"As a result, the lighting was not on for a long time. And that did have an effect on a large part of Bruges."
