A forest fire hit an air force ammunition depot in Nea Anchialos in east-central Greece, on Thursday, ERT tv reported.
Explosions, which apparently caused no injuries, were heard several kilometres away and evacuations were ordered, fire brigade spokesman Yannis Artopios told French news agency AFP.
“Part of the ammunition warehouse at the air force barracks in Nea Anchialos is on fire and an explosion has taken place,” Artopios said, adding that seven planes and three helicopters were on the scene to put out fires in the area, which has been burning since Wednesday.
The ammunition depot had been evacuated in time, Greek government sources said.
Nea Anchialos is home to one of the main bases of the Greek air force, equipped with F-16 fighter-bombers. The depot is about four kilometres north of the base, according to ERT.
