Flights to and from London have been cancelled, delayed or diverted due to a shortage of air traffic control staff at Gatwick Airport.

A dozen arrivals and departures were disrupted on Thursday evening, and affected passengers were advised to contact their airlines.

National Air Traffic Services (Nats) said it was working closely with the airport to ensure flights continued with as little disruption as possible.

It added that new air traffic controllers had been recruited since last summer, with the result that their presence had increased by around 17%.

Others were due to start work after completing their training in accordance with a plan agreed when Nats took over the Gatwick contract in October last, it added.

By 28 August this year, many routes to and from the UK had already posted long delays due to a “technical problem.”
