At the request of the Committee for the historical study of the battle of Waterloo, the European association of history teachers, EuroClio, has organized an international training seminar at Braine-l’Alleud from the 13th of February. Used to launch the commemorations for the battle’s bicentenary, around 50 history teachers from 20 European countries will attend the event.
Over the weekend, they will listen to specialists, visit the battlefield, which is mostly in Braine-l’Alleud, and take part in a workshop. This will all help them “rethink the battle from multiple perspectives”. The seminar will play on confrontation between the different visions of the battle.
“We have teachers coming from Russia and Germany, we have someone from England doing a talk… They will talk about what the battle of Waterloo brought to Europe, or even the world. We might not agree on a common vision, but the goal is to become aware of the different perceptions”, says Baron Bernard Snoy, president of the Committee for the historical study of the battle of Waterloo.
Thanks to help from the Braine-Alleud commune and financial help from the Walloon Brabant province, which will subsidize the event to the tune of 15,000 euros, EuroClio will publish a summary of the seminar. It will be mainly aimed at teachers. EuroClio is a group of 68 teacher’s associations, which are made up of around 25,000 history teachers from 45 different countries.
