Ten Belgian Italian restaurants are taking part in a week-long campaign called BiOrganic Lifestyle, designed to promote biological products.
It is part of “Bruxelles BioWeek,” which aims to showcase the best of bio produce.
Selected dishes will be cooked only using biological ingredients, which will be provided by the farms who are partners in the project.
The BioWeek project is the brainchild of FederBio, a federation of national association of Italian farmers, and supported by the EU and Italian Government. As well as Belgium, the campaign will run until 21 June in Germany and Italy.
A spokesman for the organisers said, “The aim is to increase the value of products certified as BIO and their qualitative characteristics as well as the protection of products.”
Under the BiOrganic LifeStyle Programme, FederBio wants to expand and promote the market for biological goods.
Through the dissemination of such information it seeks to communicate some of the main aspects of the products coming from local biological agriculture, such as their intrinsic characteristics as well as their organoleptic proprieties and nutritional advantages.
The project will also promote “products of excellence” in Belgium in order to support the development of the Italian biological food trade.
Products being highlighted include pasta, legumes and cereals, tomato sauce and seasonings, extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, cold cuts, parmigiano reggiano cheese, jams, honey and chocolate, rice crackers and wine.
As part of the promotion a tasting event was held at the European Parliament earlier this week highlighting the value of the biological food production.
Among the ten selected restaurants is La Cantina Italiana, on Duisburgsesteenweg in Tervuren, which is featuring special bio menus.
The three-course offering (starter, main and dessert) also comes complete with bio wine and costs €49.50. There are two types of bio pasta,one with shrimps and courgettes. Desert is Turrone with honey, almonds and melted chocolate. All the dishes are biological and the overall idea of the promotion is to “show and give value” to biological food products.
The restaurant is run by Italian-born Lorenzo Di Siervi, whose restaurant recently was voted one of the top ten Italian restaurants in Flanders by the leading Flemish daily newspaper Het Laatste Niews.
