Around 35,000 people visited the “Sun City” Sunflower maze in Mons

Set up on the Grand Place in Mons on the 17th of July as part of Mons 2015, the giant Sunflower maze “Sun City” was created by artist Fanny Bouyagui, from Art Point M. It was visited by 35,000 people before being taken down on Sunday. The flowers were handed out to residents. More than 35,000 people visited the “Sun City” maze in the 10 days it was open, the Mons 2015 Foundation say. It was made of 7,500 Sunflowers, and set up on Mons’ Grand Place. The piece, by artist Fanny Bouyagui, covered a surface of 3,000 square metres. It was an extension of Mons 2015’s main exhibition, on the painter Vincent Van Gogh.

The Dutch artist did a series of still life paintings, “Sunflowers”, when he was in Arles in 1888. The paintings show Sunflowers in all stages of their lives. The piece in Mons was taken down on Sunday, and the Sunflowers were handed out to residents.

“Sun City” was made up of five types of Sunflower: Soleil Waooh, Prado Gold, Schnitwunder, Hoog and Russian Giant. The seeds, from Italy, Spain and the South of France, were all sown and cultivated in Belgium. Mons 2015, culture capital, will continue throughout the summer. There will be a festival of circus acts and street art, called “The Enchanted Town”, during the month of August.
