Centre Pompidou a partner in the cultural beacon project of contemporary art in Brussels

The Brussels Region and Centre Pompidou reached a partnership agreement seeking to transform the old Citroën Yser garage into a cultural centre of modern and contemporary art, as well as of architecture. This was jointly announced Thursday at noon by the Minister-President of the Brussels Region, Rudi Vervoort, and the President of Centre Georges Pompidou, Serge Lasvignes.

According to the Brussels Minister-President, the possibility of allocating part of this 30,000 m2 flagship to housing – as was initially contemplated by the Brussels government – is no longer an option.

The Brussels Region and Centre Pompidou are initially cooperating on the conceptualization of the project.

Eventually, Centre Pompidou will make available to the new cultural centre part of its collection of some 120,000 works.

According to Serge Lasvignes, Centre Pompidou responded very quickly with a “yes” to the proposal made by the Brussels Region for “participating in a big international cultural project at a time when culture appears as a means of combatting intolerance and xenophobia,” because it is an opportunity for “establishing ourselves within a symbol of Europe which needs an impact and content.”

Rudi Vervoort stated that an architecture competition will be launched before the end of the year “in order to give spirit” to the complex.

A team will be established for preparing the project in detail. The present chief of staff (outgoing) of the Minister-President, Yves Goldstein, has been designated by the Brussels government to lead the initial conceptualization of the museum.
