The Kanal Foundation, Centre Pompidou, Brussels authorities and French Minister of Culture Françoise Nyssen on Friday inaugurated a temporary exposition marking the artistic launch of the Kanal-Centre Pompidou Brussels museum of contemporary art. Over the weekend, which coincides with the Brussels Region Festival, the public will be able to enjoy a multidisciplinary programme of visual arts, design and architecture, starting at noon on Saturday, for the modest sum of five euros.
At the heart of the Citroën Garage - a witness to the early beginnings of vehicle mechanics in Brussels - a 38,000-square metre space hosts some 200 works of the Centre Pompidou (Pompidou Centre), giving a foretaste of the museum to come.
The international centre, a landmark of modern and contemporary art, is associated for 10 years with the Kanal Foundation. Together they have launched a joint construction project to guide the first steps of the future Brussels Museum towards the destiny that Brussels Region wishes to reserve for it: to make art radiate in the Belgian capital and beyond, from the year 2022.
The Centre Pompidou is making use of the volumes of space available at the Citroën Garage to showcase works and compositions that it cannot exhibit in France for want of space. The creations of Belgian artistes will also be highlighted.
Curated by Bernard Blistène, director of the Museum of Modern Art, Pompidou Centre, the programming for the next 13 months follows the rhythm of the Brussels artistic calendar, in partnership with, among others, the Kunstenfestivaldesarts, the month of design and the Festival Performatik.
Sculpture, photography, film, video, architecture and bodies in motion will also feature strongly in the programming.
