Belgium wins silver medal at European Pastry Cup

Belgium won second place at the European Pastry Cup, ahead of Switzerland and behind Sweden, winner of the competition, which took place on Sunday at the Gourmet Expoforum in Turin, Italy. Two pastry chefs wore the black-yellow-red colours, Jacky Bodart and Bernard Istasse.

The final of the competition begain on Sunday morning, with the participation of seven countries. Participants had five hours to create two iced desserts, 10 plated desserts and two sculptures, one made of sugar and the other of chocolate.

The Belgian team chose the theme “Angel and demon” for its sculptures. The plated desserts were titled “Enchanting meeting between malice and gluttony” while the name of the iced fruit dessert was “Ephemeral jubilee”. 

Two years ago, Belgium had won gold at the same competition.

The European Pastry Cup decides which three teams will join their colleagues from around the globe at the international final. A total of 22 countries will participate in World Pastry Cup 2019, to be held at the Sirha salon in Lyon, France.

Since the creation of the World Pastry Cup in 1989, Belgium has won gold once, in 1995. It has had three silver medals (1993, 1999 and 2007) and three bronze medals (2003, 2009 and 2011).
