UNESCO/World Heritage: processing of application for sites 14 - 18 pushed back to 2021

The processing of the French and Belgian request for First World War memorial sites to be made Unesco World Heritage sites has been delayed until 2021, the association that cares for First World War landscapes and memorial sites revealed on Sunday.

"They have delayed processing the application until 2021. The delay isn't because of a problem with the application, it's just because memorials are a new category" the association's Secretary-General Marie-Madeleine Damien told the AFP. She spoke from Bahrein, where the Unesco World Heritage site Committee is currently meeting. "This doesn’t undermine our case at all" she said.

The application lists 139 Belgian and French military cemeteries, necropolises and commemorative monuments the association thinks should be made Unesco World Heritage sites. The sites include the Porte de Menin in Ypres, the Canadian memorial in Vimy (North of France), the Notre-Dame-de-Lorette necropolis (North of France) and the Verdun battle sites (North East France).
