“Girl”, the first feature length film by Lukas Dhont, is among the five nominees for the Best Film category at the European Film Awards. This was announced by European Film Festival organisers in Seville (Spain) on Saturday afternoon. The film’s leading actor, Belgian Victor Polster, is up for Best Actor.
“Girl” tells the story of 15-year-old Laura, born a boy, who dreams of being a star dancer. With the help of her father, the teenager enthusiastically starts down the path towards this adventure.
Lukas Dhont’s first feature length film is also one of the six nominees for the European Discovery Award. This award is handed out by the International Critic’s Federation (FIPRESCI) every year, to a European director’s first film. A director from Flanders hasn’t won the award since 2011, when it went to “Adem” by Hans Vans Nuffel.
“Girl” has already won 15 awards, including the Camera d’Or in Cannes. It began showing in Belgian cinemas on the 17th of October and 100,000 people have been to see it in two weeks.
The film is also Belgium’s official entry for the Oscars. It could compete for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars if it makes the shortlist of nominees, which will be announced on the 22nd of January.
The winners of the European Film Awards and the European Discovery Award will be announced in Seville on the 15th of December.
