Johan De Moor, this year’s best Belgian press cartoon laureate

This award of this year’s Press Cartoon Belgium prize to Johan De Moor crowns a prolific career spanning over four decades. It is also not the first time that juries, both national and international, have rewarded the Belgian comic artist and cartoonist, recipient of not a few prestigious prizes. These include the Bronzen Adhemar - the Flemish Community’s Cultural Prize for Comics (1989), Best Humour Story at the Angouleme Comics Festival in France (1995) and an earlier Press Cartoon Belgium award, in 2008.

De Moor's latest prize was announced on Tuesday after a jury made up of representatives of major NGOs selected two of the artist’s works from among 126 drawings by 32 cartoonists published in the Dutch- and French-language Belgian press in 2018.

Valued at 5,000 euros, Press Cartoon Belgium 2019 was awarded to De Moor for two of his drawings, published on 12 February and 24 December of last year in Le Soir newspaper.

Second place (2000 euros) went to Marec for a drawing published on 13 September last in Het Nieuwsblad, while Kanar was awarded third place and 1,000 euros for a cartoon in Moustique on 7 February.

The prizes will be handed over on 29 June at the opening of the Cartoon Festival International in Knokke-Heist.

Johan De Moor’s arsenal of comic, adventure and satirical works includes ‘Gaspard de la Nuit’, ‘La Vache’ and about five other series, various graphic novels and thousands of individual cartoons.
