A team of engineers at VUB has developed a prototype for a simple respirator model that will now be tested.

The new prototype could eventually help meet the urgent need to treat COVID-19 patients.

The prototype is based on work by the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has been fitted with sensors based on specifications from researchers at the John Hopkins University at Brussels University hospital UZ Brussel.

“This is essential. Other companies have also made components available. This would normally be a much slower process, but we are realising we have to work together right now,” explained Mark Runacres from VUB, highlighting the urgency of the situation and the need to act fast.
