In the district of Halle-Vilvoorde (Flemish Brabant), 13 communes have made a group purchase of 400,000 face masks, its intermunicipal association Haviland announced on Wednesday.

"Our extensive market research shows that prices are significantly reduced as from 100,000 pieces," said Haviland President Walter De Donder. After a quality control on Wednesday, Haviland chose two suppliers.

Delivery will occur in three waves throughout May, with the first masks delivered from 13 May.

Of the district's 35 municipalities, the participating communes are Affligem, Asse, Beersel, Dilbeek, Galmaarden, Grimbergen, Hoeilaart, Kampenhout, Meise, Opwijk, Overijse, Wemmel and Wezembeek-Oppem.

The communes are responsible for distribution. Haviland is planning a new group purchase in June.

Haviland also works closely with Interleuven, Flemish Brabant's other intermunicipal association, and will distribute 100,000 more face masks to other communes in Flemish Brabant, the organisation said.
