Vacation rental agencies along Belgium’s coast are calling for urgent clarifications on the reopening of the economy, the Confederation of Real Estate Professions of Flanders (CIB Vlaanderenà said in a press release on Saturday.

The 8 June date is crucial for the rental agencies, which manage some 10,000 vacation homes and apartments, of which 40% are still available for the summer months, the organisation said, adding that they are ready to resume activity in all safety.

“There needs to be clarity now,” CIB Vlaanderen Communications Director Kristophe Thijs said. “We need to be able to give the clients certainties, otherwise we fear reservations will first be blocked, then there will be bottlenecks later. The sector wishes to reopen on 8 June. We cannot leave the tourists hanging.”

CIB Vlaanderen noted that in the past few weeks, the rental agencies had listened in disbelief to the debate on secondary homes and the discussion on beach occupancy, during which, it said, an unjustified negative atmosphere was created.

“It’s unfair with regard to the many advantages the coast has to offer. Large-scale events will not be possible anywhere in the country, so not on the coast either,” said Thijs, “but all stakeholders (Toerisme Vlaanderen, Westtoer, municipalities) will be fully involved in alternative recreational options in a broad range of accessible tourist attractions.”
