Belgian rail operator SNCB has confirmed that it will put on extra trains to the Belgian coast this weekend to face up to increased demand while maintaining coronavirus measures.

Ahead of what is expected to be the first truly busy weekend at the coast, SNCB will launch ensure 50 extra trains in an effort to better spread out tourists making the trip. Ultimately, according to the company, the responsibility will remain on those travelling to make smart choices.

"If you want to take the train to the coast, check our route planner where we refer to the pressure barometer of the coast", explained spokesman Dimitri Temmerman. "Wear your mouth mask when you enter the station. If you see that the train is too busy, try to take the next train."

Over the past week Belgium has seen the number of new infections in the country continue to rise each day, prompting warnings from experts that Belgium could be facing the start of the second wave.

“The average will certainly continue to rise in the coming days. I think we should be concerned about this. This is an absolute wake-up call," said virologist Marc Van Ranst.  "Everyone should keep their distance, wear face masks and limit the number of social contacts. The rule of 15 people a week is there for a reason."
