The Belgian military is once again being called in to help out in various health care facilities, as coronavirus figures rise amid a fourth wave.

This is the case in a hospital in Soignies in Wallonia, as well as the university hospital in Antwerp and in a nursing home in Zulte in the north of the country, Het Nieuwsblad reported on Wednesday.

Defence is preparing to receive further requests for support, the cabinet of Minister Ludivine Dedonder (PS) confirmed.

The military hospital in Neder-Over-Heembeek is also preparing to initiate a care measure for all burn patients in the country, so that more hospital beds can be freed up for Covid-19 patients.

According to an earlier assessment by the Ministry of Defence, during the last wave of the pandemic there were more than 500 military personnel on duty at any given time in order to assist in the fight against the virus.
