Flemish pig farmers will ride their tractors to Brussels on Wednesday

On Wednesday 15 December, Flemish pig farmers will travel to Brussels to call on the Flemish government to find a solution to the financial difficulties facing their industry, the Algemeen Boerensyndicaat (ABS) announced on Sunday afternoon.

“The pig sector has been financially strapped for some time due to African swine fever and the situation related to the health crisis caused by the coronavirus,” ABS vice-president Paul Cerpentier explained in a statement.

“The government refuses to help our sector in this situation. It can, but it clearly lacks the political will,” added the head of the second-largest Flemish farmers’ union.

The pig farmers will therefore go to Brussels on Wednesday with tractors, at the call of the ABS. They want to gather at 9:30 AM in front of the Flemish parliament.

“We ask the Flemish government to take additional measures. We want our liquidity problems to be solved with extra support, more than the peanuts we have received so far. And we want help to restructure the Flemish pig sector into a successful, future-oriented and economically sustainable sector,” Cerpentier concluded.
