Escape in Anderlecht: Escaped inmate surrenders to police

The inmate who escaped last Friday after a visit to his dying mother at Erasme Hospital, surrendered to police on Monday, said the court in Brussels, confirming information published on the website of the daily news agency, Derniere Heure. The twenty-year old man, sentenced to five years in prison for a series of robberies, was an inmate at Forest prison. It is unclear whether or not he will be indicted for his escape. The prisoner escaped last Friday after being permitted to visit his dying mother at Erasme Hospital in Anderlecht.

The man, accompanied by three police officers, was about to leave the hospital when a car arrived at full speed. The police stepped aside to avoid being crushed by the vehicle. The prisoner took the opportunity to free himself from one of the officers and ran towards the car which had stopped a little further along the street. The agents went after the prisoner but he managed to get into the vehicle. The police, who thought he saw an armed person in the vehicle, fired at the car. The investigation was turned over to the federal judicial police in Brussels. The prosecution has opened two cases. One for the escape, another for the shots fired by police.
