2014 World Cup - Belgian involved in fatal road accident allowed home

The Bruges man who was stuck in Brazil for four months after a car accident during the World Cup has returned home.

The court finally returned his identity card to him and the man flew back to Belgium, press reported on Wednesday (Het Nieuwsblad and Het Laatste Nieuws). The two fans of the Belgian 'Red Devils' team, a father and son, were involved in a traffic accident early in July while en route to the quarter final game between Belgium and Argentina in Brasilia.

A Brazilian man died while the two Belgians, aged 46 and 22, travelling in a different vehicle, sustained respectively light and serious injuries.

Following the accident, the father, in his forties, was forced to stay in Brazil for four months after local police confiscated his identity card to prevent him from leaving the country.

The Bruges man recently got his papers back. "Legal proceedings against me are still underway," he said, "but I shouldn't have to go back to Brazil. My lawyer is dealing with this case."
