The alleged jihadist apprehended in Gosselies airport remains in jail

On Thursday, the Mons Court ruled on the preventive detention of El Eahya Aani, the young 24-year-old Syrian apprehended at the Gosselies airport (BSCA) on September 24th. Suspected of belonging to a terrorist organization, the alleged jihadist denied any affiliation with such an organization. His lawyer, Nabil Khoulalène, appealed the court’s decision and requested that his client be released.

Before the judges, Khoulalène explained that his client had left Syria to travel to Norway to be with his family and have a better future. As for the memory card and pictures found in his possesson at the time he was taken into custody, Aani  stated that he was using these items to show people what was happening in Syria.

With his request for release denied, El Eahy Aani will remain in custody for another month. "He has been in custody for little less than a month, but he is obviously shaken. This is someone who left a war-torn country to go to Norway.  My client doesn’t understand why he is in custody," concluded his lawyer.
