Namur Assises Court - jury deliberate case of Daniel Derlet

On Friday at 9.40a.m., the jury of Namur Assises Court withdrew to deliberate their verdict in the case of 45-year-old Daniel Derlet, on trial for the assassination of his ex-partner, 39-year-old Carine Ruth, on September 4, 2012, in Bois-de-Villers. The debates began on Monday and finished late afternoon on Thursday. On Thursday, the plaintiff’s lawyer, Mr. Devaux, pointed out that the accused committed what could only be described as an “execution”. Both Mr. Devaux and the general attorney, Nadia Laouar, have no doubt that premeditated murder should be the main count. Nadia Laouar pointed out several elements she feels prove that Daniel Derlet planned his actions: the fact that he went past Carine Ruth’s apartment on the day preceding the killing and that her address was the last one programmed in his GPS, the threats he issued regarding both Carine and her children, the gun placed in the kitchen instead of its usual home in the cellar, etc."

Throughout the investigation and trial, Daniel Derlet was clearly keen to get it over with as soon as possible, that “what’s done is done” and that he had to pay for his actions. On Thursday, he even asked the judge to sentence him to 35 years in prison, stating he was “already dead anyway”. The investigating judge, there to testify, compared him to Michel Fourniret for his lack of emotion, his arrogance and his manipulative personality.

The jury must give their verdict on ten questions relating to intentional homicide, premeditation, illegal carrying of firearms, phone harassment and the deliberate beating and injuries Carine Ruth was subjected to.
