The first 100% electrical powered taxis have appeared in Brussels

The first 100% electrical powered taxis have appeared in Brussels in recent weeks. The new models were presented on Wednesday, during a ceremony at Brussels Autoworld that was attended by Brussels Minister of Mobility Pascal Smet. Another important figure attended the promotional event: Ambassador of China, Mr. Liao Liqiang. And for good reason: the first model of the taxis circulating in Brussels as well as the rest of the country is a BYD e6 type, a crossover of the 5-seater produced in China, which can travel up to 300 km and has a potential top speed of 140 km/h. The battery recharges in two hours.

The vehicle, which costs twice as much as a conventional diesel taxi, allows drivers to save up to 5,500 euros every year in fuel expenses. Therefore the extra cost to initially acquire the vehicle is recovered after 4 years.

In June last year, the Brussels government launched a call for applications to find drivers for the 50 electric taxis. These fifty vehicles are part of the 1,300 license quota issued by the Region-capital.

Production of thirty four of these fifty vehicles was awarded to Chinese manufacturer BYD. Fifteen others, attributed to Nissan, are already in circulation.
