The organisers of Louvain-la-Neuve's 24-hour bicycle event of Louvain-la-Neuve had an initial debriefing of the night's events on Thursday at around 3a.m., as students were starting to leave the site. The MAP had by that time recorded a slightly larger intake than in previous years, with 105 people in need of care this year. As far as police activity is concerned, ten arrests were made and five people had their licences suspended following roadside checks. Seven of the arrests were administrative and three were made for judicial reasons. This initial assessment comes only part of the way through the night, although the organisers noticed that participants seemed to be going home earlier than in previous years, in particular taking the earliest night trains, probably due to the rainy weather.
About 70% of the 105 admissions to MAP were seen as trauma victims, that is, for injuries generally due to falls. The last half hour of the period, however, also saw some people injured in fights.
"Only 30% of admissions were alcohol-related, which means excessive drinking is on the fall and shows that the preventative measures taken are working" said Arnaud Dupuis, president of CSE Animations.
