Tram traffic has been suspended both ways between Ostende and Nieuport, according to Inge Debruyne, spokesperson for West Flanders’ De Lijn. A tram derailed in Middelkerke on Tuesday evening and the track has not been cleared yet because of strong gusts of wind.
The Flemish public transport company De Lijn chartered coaches to transport travellers from 9.00pm on Tuesday. They were still covering the route between Ostende and Nieuport on Wednesday morning. A 15-minute delay is to be expected. “We are doing all we can to minimise disruption”, said Mrs Debruyne.
De Lijn is not yet in a position to say when normal tram circulation will be re-established. Strong gales are still blowing on the coast.
