Joëlle Milquet in head teachers’ firing line

The Association of Head Teachers, which brings together 769 school heads, has denounced the subsidy freeze and sharply criticized Wallonia-Brussels Federation new Minister for Education, Joëlle Milquet. Her draft bill would allow schools to use part of their operating subsidies to hire administrative staff, reported Le Soir, on Thursday. According to the Minister, this would be a positive measure for schools that have been demanding administrative support for years.

But it has hugely angered school heads. They want this support to be funded by the Community, not by subsidies. "The Minister seems to be offering assistance, but isn’t putting her money where her mouth is. This is unacceptable. No school can afford to use its subsidies to hire admin staff," they say.

This measure isn’t deemed acceptable by school heads who fear that Mrs Milquet might mistakenly think she has found the solution to the administrative support problem in schools.
