Police may have evidence pointing to an escape attempt organised for Fouad Belkacem during the trial of the Islamist Sharia4Belgium faction for terrorism acts, according to VTM, citing reliable sources. Security measures had already been increased on Monday in Antwerp. As well as uniformed and plain clothes policemen, the presence of a helicopter hovering above the Courthouse was noted. And people attending the trial had to undergo thorough personal searches.

After the session the Singel was closed to traffic in order to allow the armoured vehicle carrying Fouad Belkacem to return to the prison unhindered.

The news was neither denied nor confirmed by police authorities. ‘’I can only say that a risk analysis was carried out at federal level, and not only for the Belkacem trial by the way, and that measures were taken in light of the findings”, explained Fons Bastiaenssens, police spokesperson, adding he could give no more details regarding those measures.

According to Maître John Maes, attorney of the accused, this is yet another rumour aimed at disparaging his client.
